Juvenile Corbicula fluminea Müller (1774) were cultured at 15.3 °C in the laboratory on eight combinations of suspended sediment and phytoplankton. Sediment concentrations were 2.6, 25, 50, and 150 mg l–1. Chlorophyll a levels were 15.6 and 62.5 µg l–1. Clam tissue growth was found to be independent of silt concentration but increased at the higher chlorophyll level (p < 0.05). The growth experiment was repeated at 24 °C with chlorophyll a concentrations of 18.9 and 112.6 µg l–1. Growth was again greater at the higher phytoplankton level (p < 0.05). These results demonstrate that Asiatic clam populations are food-limited most of the growing season in the Northern and Western portions of California's eutrophic Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta where chlorophyll a levels average less than the lower of these values. Comparisons of clam growth in the laboratory and estuary support the food limitation hypothesis as at the higher food concentration laboratory tissue growth was 2.3 and 3.8 times greater during the high and low temperature evaluations than in the estuary.  相似文献

Two groups ofAvahi laniger were studied in the Forêt de Analamozoatra near Perinet in the eastern rainforest of Madagascar from August to October 1984. Overlap between the home ranges of neighbouring groups ofA. laniger was minimal. Group size ranged from one to four individuals with a median group size of two. In four out of ten groups a baby was born between August and September.A. laniger were most active after dusk and before dawn. They had an extended resting period around midnight. Their diet consisted mostly of leaves from at least 17 different plant species. They also ate flowers. Fruit eating was recorded twice. Leaves eaten had high contents of protein and sugar but did not contain alkaloids. The concentration of condensed tannins did not differ between food items and non-food items. There was no indication of competition with other prosimians that might explain their nocturnality.  相似文献

Summary A large number of aluminum-resistant variants, selected from non-mutagenized homozygous diploid cell cultures of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia Viv., are characterized. Of 115 variants cloned and reselected from single cells, 67 retained Al resistance in callus cultures after 6–9 months of growth in the absence of Al. There was no association between Al resistance and callus growth in the absence of Al, suggesting that the Al-resistant phenotype is not detrimental in the absence of Al challenge and that Al resistance is not the result of increased vigor. Plants regenerated from initially resistant callus lines that subsequently lost their resistance failed, with one exception, to transmit resistance to their seedling progeny. Fertile plants were regenerated from 40 of the 67 variants that retained stable Al resistance in callus culture. All 40 transmitted Al resistance to their seedling progeny (selfed and backcrossed) in segregation ratios expected for a single dominant mutation. The selfed progeny of many variants also segregated for recessive lethal mutations which were attributed to independent mutations that occurred during cell culture.  相似文献

Summary Two experiments were conducted simultaneously to determine (1) if fast-growing fingerlings of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, could be identified by simple visual selection of body size and (2) if initial size advantages influenced subsequent growth and carcass traits of divergently selected channel catfish. Exp. 1 included large (L), medium (M), and small (S) fingerling sizes from each of the control (C), selected upward (+) and selected downward (–) lines for body weight. Exp. 2 included all fmgerlings of the same size (25±5 g) from the 3 lines. Catfish from the L size-class, within each full-sib family in each line, were consistently heavier and longer than M and S size-classes throughout the 53-week experimental period. Fingerlings from the M size-class were also superior in growth to those from the S size-class. Catfish from the + line exceeded those from the C and –lines in body weight and total length at the conclusion of Exp. 1 but not in Exp. 2. This was attributed to the selection of equal size fmgerlings in Exp. 2 which may have excluded fingerlings with the best growth potential from the + body weight line. Results of the two experiments combined indicated that one generation of divergent selection has created genetic differences among lines of channel catfish.Supported by State and Hatch funds allocated to the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station  相似文献

Summary A theoretical investigation was made to ascertain the effects of random and non-random deviations, called errors, of phenotypic from genotypic values on population means and on the response to phenotypic recurrent selection. The study was motivated as a selection experiment for disease resistance where there was either variability in the inoculation or environment (the random errors) or where the inoculation was above or below the the optimum rate where genetic differences in resistance are maximized (the non-random errors). The study was limited to the genetics at a diallelic locus (alleles B and b) in an autotetraploid population in random mating equilibrium. The response to selection was measured as the covariance of selection and compared to the exact covariance which was the covariance of selection without errors in phenotype. The random errors were modeled by assuming that a given percentage () of the population was uniformly distributed among the five possible genotype classes independent of their true genotypes. This model was analyzed numerically for a theoretical population with the frequency of the B allele (p) ranging from 0.0 to 1.0 and assumed errors of=0.1 and 0.5 for the following six types of genic action of the B allele: additive, monoplex dominance, partial monoplex dominance, duplex dominance, partial duplex dominance, and recessive. The effect of random error was to consistently reduce the response to selection by a percentage independent of the type of genic action at the locus. The effect on the population mean was an upward bias when p was low and a downward bias when p approached unity. In the non-random error model below optimum inoculations altered the phenotypes by systematically including percentage of susceptible genotypes into one or more other genotype classes with more genetic resistance (a positive shift). With above optimum inoculations, some resistant genotypes are classed with the non-resistant genotypes (a negative shift). The effects on the covariance of selection were found by numerical analysis for the same types of genic action and's as investigated for random error. With a negative shift and a low p, the covariance of selection was always reduced, but for an increasing p the covariance approached and exceeded the exact covariance for all types of genic action except additive. With a positive shift and a low p, response to selection was greatly improved for three types of genic action: duplex dominance, partial duplex dominance, and recessive. The effect of a non-random error on population means was to greatly bias the means upwards for a low p and positive shift, but with increasing p the bias decreased. A relatively slight decrease in the mean occurred with a negative shift. This study indicated check varieties commonly used to monitor selection pressures in screening programs are very responsive to positive non-random shifts, but are relatively unresponsive to negative shifts. A study of food and food selection of Penaeus monodon (Fabricius) on the Sudanese Red Sea coast was carried out. Juveniles feed mainly on algal material. Adults feed on crustacea, annelids, algae, mud and unidentified matter. Adults were opportunistic in their feeding behaviour, but their preference was towards animal protein.Antennae, mouth parts and fore-chelipeds were found to carry long, slender setae which are probably of sensory function. Some setae on the carpus of the endopodite were serrated and seem to be used in grooming. Numerous tufts of setae in the chela of the fore periopods may hold a gustatory function. The inner edges of the chela are lined with a row of peg-like setae, which are probably another site of reception.  相似文献

Summary It is believed that all present-day organisms descended from a common cellular ancestor. Such a cell must have evolved from more primitive and simpler precursors, but neither their organization nor the route such evolution took are accessible to the molecular techniques available today. We propose a mechanism, based on functional properties of enzymes and the kinetics of growth, which allows us to reconstruct the general course of early enzyme evolution. A precursor cell containing very few multifunctional enzymes with low catalytic activities is shown to lead inevitably to descendants with a large number of differentiated monofunctional enzymes with high turnover numbers. Mutation and natural selection for faster growth are shown to be the only conditions necessary for such a change to have occurred.  相似文献

Arrhenotokously reproducing Hymenoptera and Acarina include many important natural enemies. This reproductive system offers the opportunity of selection on hemizygous (♂ ♂), with the attendant advantages of an unmasked genotype fully exposed to selection, in creased frequency of genotypes expressing rare genes, and enhanced discrimination of characters, in all-♂ populations produced by virgin (♀ ♀). Increased selection intensity and reduced genetic drift may offer additional advantages. The method is limited to characters displayed by (♂ ♂), and may require labor-intensive techniques and species-specific research. The method has been shown to be practicable withAphytis holoxanthus DeBach (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), an important parasite of the Florida red scale,Chrysomphalus aonidum (L.)
